🏫 School refusal is not stubbornness
School refusal is often a protective response. Many neurodiverse kids experience school as unpredictable sensory demand plus social demand plus performance demand. Their body says danger.
MTWM METHOD: Dignity first, then tiny steps
We reduce threat and build return steps. We do not shame. We do not drag. We do not make it a daily debate.
Step 1: Identify the hidden demand
- Is it noise, lights, crowding, transitions, toileting, a teacher, or peer stress?
- Is it separation anxiety, performance fear, or fear of being sick at school?
🧩 MTWM clever strategy: The Demand Budget
Give the day a simple budget: 10 points. School entry might be 6. That leaves 4 points for everything else. If the budget is blown, you remove extra demands at home. This makes recovery possible.
Step 2: Build a return ladder with the school
- Week 1: enter grounds, sit in calm spot, then leave
- Week 2: enter classroom for 10 minutes, then leave
- Week 3: stay for one preferred subject, then leave
- Build slowly and celebrate consistency, not bravery theatre.
Step 3: Family accommodation reset, without cold turkey
If the home has become the safety base, we keep it kind but we stop reinforcing avoidance.
- Validate feelings: "I get it. School feels hard."
- State plan: "We are doing step one today."
- Offer choice inside plan: "car drop off or walk in".
🧠 Nervous system supports that fit school mornings
Long exhale breathing in the car. Chewy snack if allowed. Headphones for the entry. A predictable goodbye script.
