Parent accommodation is what we do to reduce a child's distress in the moment, like answering the same fear question, avoiding places, or changing routines. It is loving. It can also accidentally keep fear central.

MTWM METHOD: Compassionate reduction, planned and predictable

We keep warmth high and we lower accommodation slowly, so the child learns: "I can cope, and my parent stays calm."

Step 1: Choose one accommodation to reduce

  • Example: repeated reassurance questions before bed
  • Example: checking the toilet or bin repeatedly
  • Example: avoiding school entry every Monday

Step 2: Replace it with a support behaviour

  • Validate: "I know this feels scary."
  • Confidence statement: "I believe you can handle this."
  • Plan statement: "We are doing the next step now."
🧩 MTWM clever strategy: The Reassurance Coupon
Give your child 3 reassurance coupons per day. When coupons are used, you switch to the script only. This turns endless reassurance into a predictable limit without harshness.

Step 3: Track wins, not symptoms

Track the behaviours you want: school entry, trying the skill, staying in the room, eating a bite. Not the nausea rating every hour.
