🏠 What this is
After school meltdowns are often sensory and social debt coming due. This buffer is a no demand window that protects evenings and stops stacked load.
Signal check: you need a buffer if
- Meltdown happens within 30 minutes of getting home
- Evenings are harder than mornings
- Homework triggers tears instantly
- Sibling conflict spikes after school
- Your child refuses questions, even "how was your day"
🧩 MTWM METHOD: The 20 minute buffer
A simple structure with a no demand rule. We protect the nervous system first. Then we re enter home mode.
The 20 minute buffer
Minute 0 to 5: body basics
- Water
- Snack
- Bathroom offer, no pressure
Minute 5 to 15: sensory downshift, pick one
- Quiet corner plus dim light
- Headphones
- Movement micro dose: stairs, trampoline, walk to mailbox
Physical activity interventions have evidence for reducing anxiety in autistic people, so movement can be a fast state tool.
Minute 15 to 20: re entry cue
One predictable cue that home mode begins: same song, same chair, same visual card.
Try this tonight: the no question contract
For 20 minutes: no questions, no instructions, no corrections. One sentence only: "You are safe. Buffer first."
Make it smaller
- Water and snack (2 minutes)
- Headphones (3 minutes)
- Sit together silently (2 minutes)
✨ MTWM plays that make evenings easier
Traffic light check in: 🟢 🟡 🔴. Child points. Your response is one word: green, buffer, ramp.
Two worlds rule: school world and home world do not blend instantly. Bridge ritual every day: shoes off, wash hands, snack.
Move first, talk later: movement micro dose before any discussion.
When to get backup
- After school collapse is severe and persistent
- Sleep is unstable, because sleep disturbance affects daytime function
- You want OT support for sensory planning and interoception support
