🍓 What texture aversion actually is
Texture aversion is often a sensory prediction problem. The mouth and body want safety and sameness. The goal is not forcing new foods. The goal is expanding tolerance without threat.
MTWM METHOD: Texture ladder, not food fights
We build a ladder for one food family at a time. We change only one property at a time: crunch, wetness, temperature, mixed textures, or smell.
Step 1: Choose one safe food family
- Example: crackers family, yoghurt family, pasta family, chicken nuggets family.
- Pick a family that already feels safe.
Step 2: Build a 6 rung ladder
- Rung 1: look at it
- Rung 2: touch with finger
- Rung 3: smell
- Rung 4: kiss or lick
- Rung 5: bite and spit allowed
- Rung 6: chew and swallow
🧩 MTWM clever strategy: The Texture Twin
Create a "twin" version of the safe food that changes only one thing. Example: same cracker but different brand texture. Or same yoghurt but slightly thicker. Kids often accept twins faster than totally new foods.
Mealtime environment rules
- One safe food must always be available.
- No bribing, no bargaining, no threats.
- Short meals. End while the child is still okay.
- Use a separate plate for "practice" foods.
Aromatherapy and sensory supports
If smell triggers are big, a predictable neutral scent in the environment can sometimes help, but many kids are scent sensitive. Start with no scent. If you trial a scent, keep it brief and optional.
When to involve feeding specialists
- If weight gain, growth, or nutrient intake is at risk.
- If there is choking risk, swallowing difficulty, or frequent gagging beyond sensory response.
- If family meals are high stress daily.
