Meltdown support script (neurodiverse kids)
When your child is in meltdown, their nervous system is overloaded. Your job is not to win the moment it’s to reduce threat, reduce input, and keep everyone safe.
The script (say less, mean it more)
“I will keep you safe. We can be upset and still be safe. I’m right here.”
- Voice: slower + lower
- Words: 1 short sentence at a time
- Body: side‑on, not towering
What to stop doing (for now)
- Questions (“Why are you doing this?”)
- Lectures / consequences in the peak
- Bargaining, bribing, negotiating
- Too much eye contact if they are sensory‑sensitive
After the peak: repair without shame
- Start with: “That was big. I’m still here.”
- Offer water + snack + deep pressure / movement.
- Later (not now), choose one tiny skill to practise next time.
Next gentle step
