ADHD and the mental load

ADHD and the mental load

ADHD is not laziness. In daily family life it often shows up as time blindness, task switching fatigue, and overload from constant interruptions.

Why common advice fails

  • Plans that rely on perfect consistency collapse under real parenting chaos.
  • Systems with too many steps create avoidance.
  • Shame makes executive function worse, not better.

Systems that respect executive function

  1. One capture point. One list, one calendar, one place to put everything.
  2. Fewer switches. Batch tasks. Protect transitions.
  3. Visible cues. Out of sight often becomes out of mind.
  4. Reset scripts. A short routine for when the day derails.

The goal is not productivity. The goal is less friction and more steadiness.
