Parental burnout
Parental burnout is not just being tired. It is a chronic mismatch between demand and resources, where recovery never catches up.
Early signs that matter
- Feeling emotionally flat, snappy, or unusually detached.
- Shutdown after school pickup, noise, or transition points.
- Planning feels impossible. Even small admin creates dread.
- You stop recognising yourself in your reactions.
For neurodiverse households, these signs can appear sooner because sensory load and unpredictability raise baseline stress.
What makes it worse, fast
- Unpredictable routines, especially mornings and bedtimes.
- Carrying the full mental load without shared planning.
- Sleep fragmentation plus constant decision making.
- Masking, people pleasing, and over explaining to outsiders.
What helps first, without becoming another job
- Stabilise one window. Choose either mornings or evenings. Make it boring on purpose.
- Reduce exposure. One less loud place, one less optional commitment, one less open ended conversation.
- Use scripted decisions. Pre decide meals, clothes, and pickup routines.
- Hand over a whole lane. Not a task. A lane. For example, lunches for the week, or all school forms.
Relief often arrives when cognitive load drops, not when motivation rises.
